Timeless Healing: The Power and Biology of Belief (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (October, 1996)
Authors: Herbert Benson and Marg Stark
Average review score:

Faith in God turbo-charges our indwelling healing nature
I think what is amazing about this book is that Herbert Benson states without a doubt that faith in God is healthy for us. While our ancestors took it for granted that God healed them, as Dr. Benson explains, we have been taught to see healing purely in technical scientific terms. Dr. Benson explains that when we repudiated the importance of belief in healing we deprived ourselves of a powerful healing force.

Dr. Benson knows that his rational-scientific audience will be skeptical of his arguements. So, he provides us with well-reasoned arguements supported by ample evidence. He explains that we need to relax our over-stressed minds on a regular basis. We need this as an antedote to our hurried lives that stress us out and make us sick. He cites many studies (much from his own research) that daily meditation stimulates the bodies natural healing mechanisms.

Now, the radical finding of Dr. Benson's research is that belief in God makes a difference in healing. If a person meditates regularly using a spiritual phrase they are more likely to heal than those who use a secular word such as "peace". The person's religion doesn't matter. It seems that God is an equal opportunity healer.

The Mind/body connection
Dr Benson presents strong evidence for what others have called the "mind / body connection." Mainstream medical science has not yet recognized the importance belief plays in health but, Dr. Benson presents numerous studies that validate the major role belief plays in the healing process and wellness. Practitioners of complimentary therapies will find this book especially helpful in understanding how many non-drug based therapies can work. Well written and thought provoking!

Timothy's Tales from Hilltop School
Published in School & Library Binding by Viking Childrens Books (July, 2002)
Authors: Rosemary Wells and Jody Wheeler
Average review score:

Fun chapter book to read to the preK set
My 3 year old son loves this book (and so do I)! Each chapter is its own story; read in its entirety, the book is a wonderful tale of kindergarten life.

LEARNING AND LAUGHTER ABOUND
Youngsters will enjoy, identify with and learn from these six apropos and funny stories by award winning author Rosemary Wells. With the same friendly characters found in "Timothy Goes To School" the author tells tales that teach young ones how to share, how to take turns, how to work together, and how to persist in achieving goals.

Teachers are depicted as fair mentors who help, encourage and, yes, are firm when it's necessary.

In "Fritz Tries Again" it is Science Fair time and Fritz is determined to make a toilet paper roll Superconducting Super Collider. His classmates don't think this is possible and opt for more realistic projects such as collecting seashells or different mosses. Does Fritz surprise them all, including himself?

During Bird Week Charles, who is not very big and rather shy, chooses to be a bald eagle. Claude had his heart set on being a bald eagle and tries everything he can think of to trade birds with Charles. First he makes fun of him, and then he offers to give Charles his red truck and yellow airplane. But Charles stands firm although secretly he is afraid he cannot sound very much like a Bald Eagle. Does he overcome his uncertainty?

Not all of the fun takes place in classrooms. There are also other adventures for children ages 3 - 8 to follow as they learn about their friends and themselves.

Tis the Season: Holly Pond Hill
Published in Paperback by Dutton Books (07 August, 2000)
Author: Susan Wheeler

Adorable advent calendar!
I collect advent calendars, and am always looking for interesting ones that aren't just the run of the mill--this calendar is darling. The bunny families are beautifully drawn, and each door that is opened continues the scene in some way, actually telling a little story each time a door is opened. It is charming.

A very pretty decoration for all, and fun for children
The lovely watercolor print shows a pond skating scene, full of Holly Pond Hill bunnies in their victorian costumes. Very sweet! There is a little flap to open for each day of the advent season with a cute little surprise inside.

It will stand upright on a table or under your tree. It can be stored for use in years to come.

I'm looking forward to starting an advent calendar tradition with my toddler this year. She'll really enjoy those cute bunnies.

Too Much Coffee Man: Guide for the Perplexed
Published in Paperback by Dark Horse Comics (13 May, 1998)
Author: Shannon Wheeler

Good To The Last Drop.
A great read. I couldn't put it down, even when confronted by wild children and an irate spouse. TMCM does battle with the contradictions and idiocy of everyday life, saves the men of Mars, screams at the dirty dishes, wanders about naked, and leaves us with a sense of wonder (or is it wonderment?) at his nicotine and caffeine induced "super" powers. Wheeler's wry social commentary aligns him with the likes of Outcault, Herriman, McKay and Bushmiller. TMCM is a sure antidote to drivel like "Zippy" (not to mention the fact that it is far better drawn). Spare poor Shannon Wheeler the pain of seeing his work ignored. Read this book. Write a review. Keep the pot fresh. The Guatman

It seemed to mirror my own life.
I had mixed feelings about reading this book. Finally, late one night, I managed to open the book to a random page and start reading. I was sucked in. My own thoughts were expressed in ways I never thought possible. In many ways this is the best book I have ever read. Soon I'll start to write a second book. -Shannon Wheeler

Outstanding and up-to-date
I just returned after 6 weeks in China and I heartily recommend this book which I took with me. It has excellent descriptions of places, tourist attractions, accommodations and travel tips. It also has some very nice pictures and a nice little section on Chinese history that puts things into perspective. Most importantly, give the rate at which things are changing in China I was impressed with how current the information in it is. Definitely a strong recommendation in its favor!

The superior China guide, the writers deserve an award!
I just returned from my 1st trip to China and was thoroughly impressed with your superb Traveler's CHINA Companion". Excellent writing throughout--the writers deserve an award! Although the Lonely Planet guide is extremely popular with most other travellers, after extensive reading, I believe your guide to be superior to all others!

A Treasure Chest of Behavioral Strategies for Individuals With Autism
Published in Paperback by Future Horizons (August, 1997)
Authors: Beth Fouse and Maria Wheeler
Average review score:

Great stuff for the "practicalities" of living with autism
This book provides great hands-on tips for dealing with autism. The case studies and examples make confusing or unusual approaches much clearer and easier to try at home or explain to others (doctors, teachers, etc.). Reading cover to cover is unnecessary, all chapters can be read independently. The authors give clear, knowledgeable solutions for dealing with such problem behaviors as escaping, biting, and "stimming", along with lots of information on using various intervention techniques. A must-have for teachers and parents!

A "to the point" resource for professionals and families.
This book is a "must have" resource for anyone who works with children with Autism. The Authors have clearly synthesized current best practices in the field and given the reader many case study examples.

Turk and Runt : A Thanksgiving Comedy
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (October, 2002)
Authors: Lisa Wheeler and Frank Ansley
Average review score:

Turkey for Thanksgiving?
Lisa Wheeler writes some of the most delightful children's books around today. "Turk and Runt" is a gigglefest! What child can't relate to Runt, the younger brother, who just can't seem to measure up to "perfect" Turk. No-one ever listens to Runt and it nearly costs Turk his life. Read this book to your children or just read it for your own pleasure.

Delightful!
Laugh-out-loud funny! The kids loved it and the adults had their funny bones tickled as well. Read this one out loud to the whole family, then plan on having tacos for Thanksgiving.

Victoria Rose's Christmas Caroling Party
Published in Hardcover by Dutton Books (October, 1998)
Author: Susan Wheeler
Average review score:

Excellent For Carolers
Anyone who goes Christmas caroling needs this book.

This book has the lyrics and music of the songs:

Jingle Bells
The First Noel
Deck The Halls
O Christmas Tree
Silent Night
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
O Come, All Ye Faithful
We Wish You A Merry Christmas
I Saw Three Ships
Joy To The World

Not only that, the book has special chapters about tree trimming, and holiday goodies. Also, the illustrations are unbelievably beautiful.

This is a must have book for anyone who loves caroling, or just wants a special decoration this holiday season.

Inspiration for hosting a caroling party this December
The book is very cute and will look nice on the coffee table throughout the Christmas season. I like the perforated tear-out lyric sheets in the back of the book. It has many ideas and recipes for creating a caroling party - Cranberry punch, gingerbread cookies, and instructions for a few parlor games. Can be displayed upright and open on a table.

I would recommend this to anyone who loves "cute" things.

The Voice of Shame: Silence & Connection in Psychotherapy ("Gestalt Institute of Cleveland Book Series)
Published in Hardcover by Analytic Press (December, 1996)
Authors: Robert G. Lee and Gordon Wheeler
Average review score:

Excellent book
Bob Lee and Gordon Wheeler have compiled a wonderfully insightful book about shame as it exists in our American culture. With chapters submitted by a number of creative individuals, there are articles (among others on) shame and homosexuality; male-male relationships; social class systems; and chronic illness.

This book has made a significant impact on my work as a therapist and consultant. I would encourage every therapist and consultant to read this book.

Intelligent and practical.
An excellent book. Shines new light on a dark subject, and uses the Gestalt model to make interpersonal shame dynamics more understandable. This book had a notable impact on my clinical work.

When a Baby Dies: A Handbook for Healing and Helping
Published in Paperback by Rts Bereavement (25 October, 1998)
Authors: Rana K. Limbo, Sara Rich Wheeler, and Susan T. Hessel
Average review score:

an excellent infant loss resource
This was the first book I read after my baby was diagnosed with a fatal birth defect. I highly recommend it to anyone--parent, friend, or professional--who might have to deal with infant loss. The book talks about the grieving process, ways to find emotional support, and the ways a parent may find of memorializing a baby. There are suggestions for doctors, clergy, and funeral home staff. This book has many personal stories as well as general guidelines and ideas, keeping in mind that just as everyone would have parented their babies differently, so they will grieve and remember differently. Quite thorough book dealing with a subject many would rather not dwell on, and with many many excellent suggestions.

A Great Book for Parents, Friends, Family and Professionals.
This book was one of the first books I read after my daughter's stillbirth. It is a very good book because you can read the stories of babies who were lost to ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death and how their parents have learned to cope. This book also helps friends, family and professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives, clergy, and funeral directors) to understand how to help the bereaved parents. This is a book that everyone should read.
